It's that time again. It comes around every ten years. Mandated by our Constitution, the effort to count how many of us live in America has occurred once every decade since 1790. According to my count, this will be the 23rd such census.
We urge each of you to cooperate fully and to complete and return the census form when it comes to a mailbox near you. It's every bit as much a civic duty as voting in elections, which every responsible adult citizen should do.
A simple illustration of how important that can be: In the 2000 census the state of Utah fell a mere 857 residents short of qualifying for a fourth congressional seat. The unfortunate part was that an estimated 30,000 Utah residents went uncounted because they didn't return their census forms or didn't respond to census workers who tried to follow up thereafter.
It occurred to me while thinking about all this that now would be a great time to try to ascertain how many people there are currently living in each branch of our family. So, by way of this message I am inviting Lyle, Lynda (for Gail's family), Kay, Gene, Sheryl (for Ray's family), Dale, and Jackie (or someone representing them in each of these families) to respond by telling us how many are currently in their branch of the family. I already have Jerry's information.
I've tried through the years to keep track of everyone for purposes of this newsletter, but I am not at all certain I have an accurate count of how many of us there are. So, by e-mail, letter, or whatever is most convenient, please send me an up-to-date list by April 1 of each person in your family listing four things: full name, gender, birth date, and current city/state of residence. Optionally, it would also be helpful to include an e-mail address for any who have such. Here is an example of what we're looking for from our oldest son's family:
