Adapted from a story my secretary at work shared with me
Two little boys, ages 8 and 10, were excessively mischievous. They were always getting into trouble, and their parents knew if any mischief occurred in town, the two boys were probably involved.
The boys' mother heard that a preacher in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The preacher agreed, but he asked to see them individually.
The mother sent the 8-year-old in the morning, with the older boy to see the preacher in the afternoon. The preacher, a huge man with a deep booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Do you know where God is, son?"
The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open. So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone, "Where is God?!"
Again, the boy made no attempt to answer. The preacher raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "WHERE IS GOD?!"
The boy screamed, bolted from the room, ran directly home, and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, "What happened?"
The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, "We are in BIG trouble this time! God is missing, and they think we did it!"

4 Bits and tidbits
Kay's family
The big news here is Kay's hip surgery last Thursday in Salt Lake City's St. Mark's Hospital. Claudia and I visited him both Friday and Saturday nights. It appears everything went as expected. He thought he'd be getting out of the hospital on Monday, but Wednesday morning Karen sent out the following e-mail:
"Kay completed his first full day in rehab yesterday. He is still in St Mark's Hospital, but they moved him over to Rehab just before dinner on Monday. He is working hard and learning how to do for himself. I really am not supposed to help him and I have been good. I think all of those years I worked in PT has made me realize how important it is for Kay to do this himself, even though I want to help make it easier.
"He is still on the 5th floor, but is now in the 5 South TCC (Transitional Care) Wing, room #11. Today he will tackle learning to navigate on crutches and doing stairs. Thank you so much for your calls, your prayers, your love and support. It has really helped. We are thinking that maybe by tomorrow or Friday he will be released. He has a doctor's appointment Monday and then we will head home to Hurricane."

Shellbi Jane Packwood is graduating from Kuna High School on Friday, May 27. The ceremony is being held at the Idaho Center at 4:00 p.m. Our congratulations to her.

5 Our family 50 years ago
Excerpts from the May 1961 diary of Dorothy Batt Cleverly (1915–1982). The full text of her diary can be found online at Dorothy's Idaho Diaries and is updated daily, exactly 50 years to the day after it was originally written. The family at the time lived on Montana Avenue in Nampa, Idaho.
Thurs, May 18. Jackie & I went to Primary. They had a special Mothers day programe & lunch on. There were 40 of us.
Fri, May 19. Kids went to Seminary (Gene & Ray). They started over a week ago. Income tax refund came so we went to bank & paid Dobbs $200. on repaire bill then we went over to Nyssa to see Gail. At 7: Jerry called & said Bill & Jean had come & gone to Boise & would be back so we hurried right home.
Sat, May 20. Jerry worked for boss's wife until 6: doing yard. Ray went to practice piano tonite & ward teaching.
Sun, May 21. Ray went to Priesthood. Ray came home & took little Kids to sunday school. We ate at 3: & all of us went out to Pinsters to Rays first Piano recital.
Mon, May 22. I called Stockman 3 times & Ivard said he'd be right home, once I told him there was no one to milk, but he never did come. I was sure mad at Ivard.
Tues, May 23. We were awake until 3: AM talking & me bawling, makeing up.
Wed, May 24. Gene left for Nyssa at 4: A.M to work for Gail, he's sick. Jackie was sick.
Thurs, May 25. Don't feel very good. Jackie - Dean & I went to church at 7:30 to Dales Cub Scout Pack meeting.
Fri, May 26. Got cold tonite, had fire in fireplace. Last day of school, they all passed.
Sat, May 27. Gene went to Nyssa to work for Summer for Carl Simpson. Kids had to wear coats out to play.
Sun, May 28. Marv. & Lorraine came from Utah. Jerry & Ray were just leaving for Priesthood when Marv. called to see where we lived so Ivard went up & met him & brought them down, Loraine & I went to sunday school with little kids. Jackie had to give closeing prayer. After dinner Ivard & I, Dean, Dale & Jackie took them out to see our old place & the lake.
Mon, May 29. Marv & Loraine left for Idaho Falls at 7:30 to go to Temple.
Tues, May 30. No one had to work today & we all laid in bed late. It was cloudy most of day & cool. I fixed picnic lunech & we ate at 5:30. All of us but Jerry went to Kuna to play ball. Kids got beat by Marshing 1 point. Comeing home Ivard missed the first curve on a cork screw curve & went off road through big boulders & pile of lumber. blew out new tire & wrecked a rim, scared us to death.
Wed, May 31. Ivard, Dean & Dale hoed garden.

Osama Bin Laden
President Obama addressed the nation on Sunday night, May 8, to announce that U.S. special forces had found Osama Bin Laden and taken him out. An al Qaeda leader of terrorism directed against America, he was a mastermind behind the attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon nearly ten years ago. This coming September 11 will mark the tenth anniversary of those horrific events.
Flooding and other crazy stuff
All the snow and rain many parts of the country experienced this past winter is now beginning to translate into widespread flooding in many areas, especially up and down the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries. More than two million acres of farmland have flooded already, not to mention many homes flooded or wiped out, and the Mississippi River hasn't even crested yet.
Our daughter and her family in southern Illinois had to keep a sump pump going around the clock to keep ahead of basement flooding from all the rain they were getting.
And just weeks earlier some of the deadliest tornadoes in memory touched down across many states throughout the Southeast. Alabama was particularly hard hit. Our son-in-law, who just finished his coursework at pharmacy school in Atlanta, was among hundreds of Church members who traveled to Alabama to help in the massive clean-up effort. He got to wear one of the bright yellow Mormon Helping Hands t-shirts.
All this craziness probably dwarfs the flooding anticipated here in Utah when the record-breaking snows in our mountains actually starts melting and coming down. Unless, of course, you live where it actually floods.
And Texas is experiencing a major drought. It's either feast or famine.

7 A final word
We posted an entry above in "What in the world" about flooding and other crazy weather patterns currently or recently hitting parts of our country. A couple months ago it was a mega-earthquake and resultant tsunami in Japan. Earlier it was incredible winter storms hitting various parts of the country, including ice and snow in places that typically do not see ice and snow.
When I was a boy growing up in Nampa, I remember Mom saying, "Well, it is the last days," whenever an unusual natural disaster was reported anywhere in the world. It became almost comical she said it so often. But, it is the last days. Nature's upheavals are among the signs of the times.
Mom was right, after all.

1 Four hundred and counting
This Cleverly Newsletter marks the 400th issue we have published since that first quarterly issue came out of my typewriter on the Labor Day weekend in 1973. That was nearly 38 years ago. The family has grown substantially since then. The world has changed a lot. Technology has altered the way we communicate across the miles.
And, yet, some things are still very much the same. The love of family members. The importance of our heritage. Appreciation for our country. Faith in God.
I don't plan on doing another 400 issues, but we'll keep it going for as long as feasible. Any friendly takeovers will be welcomed at any time.

Relatively speaking
Lyle called Sunday evening to tell me that Veryl Cleverly had died, and a couple days later Kay e-mailed me a copy of the obituary, which we share here:
Veryl Cleverly 1937 ~ 2011. Veryl Cleverly was born October 5, 1937, and died May 1, 2011, of complications from open heart surgery. He was the eighth child born to Viene Lauretta Potts and Thomas Franklin Cleverly. Veryl was born in the basement house that his father was building on Howard St. in then Woods Cross, now Main St. in North Salt Lake, UT. He enjoyed a childhood of roaming the foothills east of his home and riding the sheep and hiding in the hay bales at the old North Salt Lake stockyards. Friends Bill Wood, Sam Howard, Ralph Kenyon, and nephew Norton Cleverly were always there with him to put pennies on the railroad tracks and share other adventures.
When Veryl was 14 he spent a summer working on his brother Lawrence's farm near Nyssa, Oregon. He liked this life and the next summer chose to stay and attend high school with his nieces Deone and Jerilyn. He also liked Carolyn Vaughn, the girl across the aisle in his English and physics classes. He married her on July 19, 1956, in the LDS temple in Logan, Utah. Veryl and Carolyn shared 55 years together.
Veryl was an accountant for 21 years at International Harvester in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Burley, Idaho. He then worked for J & J Office Supply in Burley before purchasing Jackson's Office Supply in Craig, Colorado, in 1976. He and Carolyn worked together until they retired to their "paradise" upriver of Meeker, Colorado, in 1993. They have resided in Preston, Idaho, since 2007.
Veryl loved and cared for Carolyn with all his heart. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and tinkering with his sprinkler system. His children, grandchildren, and his yard were his pride and joy. Veryl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved serving people in the church and in the community.
Veryl is survived by four children, Derek (Lani) Craig, CO; Kathryn Spencer (Kenny) Lehi, UT; Alex (Lori) Oxnard, CA; Blake (Bruchele) Casper, WY; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell (RaNae); and two sisters, Lorraine Hudson, Atascadero, CA; and Ann Thomson (Dale) Salt Lake City, Utah. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willard, Lee, Lawrence, one sister Arlean Dennis, and one grandson Shelby Spencer.
Services will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011, in Preston, Idaho 8th Ward, 213 South 2nd East at 12 noon. Friends may greet the family at the church between 10:30 and 11:45 a.m., prior to the service. Graveside services at the Bountiful city cemetery will be held at 5:00 p.m. that same day. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.

When he called Sunday night, Lyle said he was planning to travel to Preston to attend Veryl's funeral. He also suggested we might want to turn our TV on to see the news about the death of Osama Bin Laden.

I talked on the phone with Jerry last night. He sounded good. Jerry's first missionary companion that he had after he was transferred from eastern Canada to the Western States Mission some 50 years ago was trying to get in touch with him, and I called Jerry to see if it was OK to give out an address and phone number. He said it was OK. Jerry also mentioned Veryl's passing.
Kay's family
Kay will be having an operation on his hip within the next couple of weeks. The operation will be performed in Salt Lake's St. Mark's Hospital.
Gene's family
Savanna Alisha Cleverly is graduating from high school! A celebration was held at the Cleverly home in Portales, New Mexico, last Saturday evening, April 30. Our congratulations to her.
Dean's family
On Easter Sunday, April 24, Claudia was sustained as our ward Relief Society president. That call came totally by surprise, and she would be willing to be simply "a happy helper" (in her words), but she knows how to love and care for people, so she'll do a marvelous job.

Sun, May 7. Jerry - Gene & Ray went to Priesthood & sunday school. Ivard went to sunday school with me & little Kids at noon. We came home & made barbacue & punch & ate. Ray went delivering fast offerings. We all went to church but Jerry & Gene to Primary programe. Dean was the narrator & did good.
Mon, May 8. I cook ham & lima beans for supper. Gene came home early & went to play ball at 6: at rodeo Park. first game of tournment won. Ivard went too.
Tues, May 9. 85 degrees today. sure hot.
Wed, May 10. Dale joined cub scouts today. Ivard is sick, his stomache. Dale came home from school at 3: & got a dime & walked over to Perry's to his first cub scout meeting. Ivard & I went to President Hurren;s & had Temple recomends signed.
Thurs, May 11. Ivard went to Temple at I.F. Ward temple excursion.
Fri, May 12. Got a mother day card, poem & letter from Kay. Ray & Gene went to Fathers & Sons Priesthood Party at Stake House with Mr. Kotter.
Sat, May 13. We got laid off this morning, for 2 or 3 weeks any way - I'm sure happy. Ivard got home from Idaho Falls about 3:30 A.M.
Sun, May 14. Ivard, Jerry - Gene & Ray went to Priesthood. I put a meat loaf in & made tomatoe aspic & had a bath & me & little Kids went to sunday school & Mother Day Programe. When we got there there was Gail, Lynda & Kids, went to church with us. Came home & ate. Had buffett style Picnic lunch, meat loaf, potatoe salad, baked beans tomatoe aspic ring filled with cottage cheese olives, pickles & potatoe chips & Punch & Jerry went & got sherbert (orange) & 2 Heart shaped cakes.
Mon, May 15. Gene came home & I took him to Dr. Daines & had his eyes examined because school nurse said he couldn't see & because they bother him. Dr. said he definetly didn't need glasses That the dust & feed he'd got in his eyes was irritating them. We droped Ivard off at Dr. first & he said he has been walking around with Phnemonia & his stomache is bothering him too. He got a bunch of pills.
Tues, May 16. I got up at 6:30 with Kids & never stoped all day. I was so tired & ached so bad, Ivard had to rub me with Alchole.
Wed, May 17. Ivard went back to bed, he still doesn't feel very good. I cooked a roast & got supper & we ate when Jerry came & he went ward teaching. Gene went ward teaching too & Ray went out for his Piano lesson.

Infamous leaders killed
President Obama spoke to the nation late Sunday evening, May 1, to report that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed by American special forces in Pakistan. Our daughter Eliza shared with us this interesting item in the New York Daily News about a similar announcement from 65 years earlier
"Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler share a towering reputation for evil—and also an anniversary. Both were declared dead on May 1. Late on May 1, 1945—about as late as President Obama's TV announcement Sunday—German radio announced that Hitler had fallen 'fighting to the last breath against Bolshevism and for Germany.' He had actually committed suicide the day before."
Temple rededicated
The Atlanta Georgia Temple, originally dedicated 28 years ago, has been closed for the past nearly two years for extensive remodeling and updating. This past Sunday, May 1, it was rededicated in two sessions by President Thomas S. Monson. Paul and Eliza Challis from our family attended a broadcast of the dedicatory service in their chapel in Atlanta Sunday morning.
Choir to tour east coast
Five cities. Seven days. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square go on a whistle-stop tour in June 2011 to eastern cities in the U.S and Canada. They will visit five cities beginning Monday, June 20, and return home a week later.
President Obama spoke to the nation late Sunday evening, May 1, to report that Osama Bin Laden had been found and killed by American special forces in Pakistan. Our daughter Eliza shared with us this interesting item in the New York Daily News about a similar announcement from 65 years earlier
"Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler share a towering reputation for evil—and also an anniversary. Both were declared dead on May 1. Late on May 1, 1945—about as late as President Obama's TV announcement Sunday—German radio announced that Hitler had fallen 'fighting to the last breath against Bolshevism and for Germany.' He had actually committed suicide the day before."
Temple rededicated
The Atlanta Georgia Temple, originally dedicated 28 years ago, has been closed for the past nearly two years for extensive remodeling and updating. This past Sunday, May 1, it was rededicated in two sessions by President Thomas S. Monson. Paul and Eliza Challis from our family attended a broadcast of the dedicatory service in their chapel in Atlanta Sunday morning.
Choir to tour east coast
Five cities. Seven days. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square go on a whistle-stop tour in June 2011 to eastern cities in the U.S and Canada. They will visit five cities beginning Monday, June 20, and return home a week later.
7 A final word
The final word, although we didn't call it that back then, from the very first issue of the Cleverly Newsletter in September 1973.
And now a parting observation from Harold B. Lee's closing address in the April 1973 general conference:
"Go home now to your people, I pray you, and say as did Joshua of old: 'As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord' (Joshua 24:15). Teach your families in your family home evening, teach them to keep the commandments of God, for therein is our only safety in these days. If they will do that, the powers of the Almighty will descend upon them as the dews from heaven, and the Holy Ghost will be theirs."
That's quite a promise! And it comes from the prophet of God. I commend this counsel to you, with my hearty blessing and love.
How very true that counsel was and is. Some things, the important things, really do not change all that much, after all.
