1 Easter

This coming Sunday is Easter, the central feast of the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ following His crucifixion three days earlier. It celebrates the triumph over death and sin. It commemorates the very foundation of the Christian faith: that Jesus Christ was the Messiah, sent to earth by His Father, who is God, to redeem all mankind from physical death and His people (those who come unto Him) from spiritual death.

As the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the early Saints in Corinth, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

"But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

"For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

"But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming" (1 Corinthians 15:19-23).

The date for Easter varies each year. Simply speaking, it is the Sunday that follows the first full moon that occurs after the spring equinox. The actual calculations are a wee bit more complicated than that, resulting in differing dates being observed during most years between Eastern Orthodox and western branches of Christianity. Under the existing formula, the earliest date Easter can fall is March 22 and the latest date is April 25.

Last year Easter Sunday fell on April 4. This year on April 24. Next year on April 8. And the year after that [2013] on March 31.

There have been efforts throughout the years to reform the dates when Easter is celebrated, such as simply selecting the second Sunday of April, but none has gained traction.

In many countries, particularly in Europe, the day following Easter is celebrated as a legal holiday known as Easter Monday.

Aside from its strictly religious importance, many pagan influences (and more recently commercial influences) have crept into the observance of Easter: such things as Easter bunnies, Easter baskets, Easter egg hunts, and Easter candy. Such secular customs in today's celebrations are often observed by Christians and non-Christians alike.

2 Quote of the week

For us our Heavenly Father gave His Son. For us our Elder Brother gave His life.

At the last moment the Master could have turned back. But He did not. He passed beneath all things that He might save all things: the human race, the earth, and all the life that ever inhabited it.

No words in Christendom mean more to me than those spoken by the angel to the weeping Mary Magdalene and the other Mary as they approached the tomb to care for the body of their Lord: “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen” (Luke 24:5–6).

6 What in the world

Temple dedication
Following extensive renovation, the Georgia Atlanta Temple is being rededicated by President Thomas S. Monson in two sessions on Sunday, May 1. A public open house has been held this month and ends this Saturday, April 23. There will be a cultural celebration on Saturday, April 30, the evening before the dedication.

7 A final word

An Easter message issued April 16, 2011, by the First Presidency

Among the most cherished thoughts and writings in this world is the divine statement of truth: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

This precious Son, our Lord and Savior, atoned for the sins of all mankind. That memorable night in Gethsemane His suffering was so great, His anguish so consuming that He pleaded, "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Later, on the cruel cross, He died that we might live, and live everlastingly. Resurrection morning was preceded by pain, by suffering in accordance with the divine plan of God. Before Easter, there had to be a cross. The world has witnessed no greater gift, nor has it known more lasting love.

The message of Easter is that the Savior lives! And because He lives all shall indeed live again. This knowledge provides the peace for loved ones of those who have passed on, "Oh, sweet the joy this sentence gives: 'I know that my Redeemer lives!'"

1 What your kids really want for dinner

Researchers at one of America's most prestigious universities have called family dinner an essential ingredient in the recipe for raising happy, healthy children. In addition, family dinner is a predictor in keeping children away from unhealthy behaviors.

More than a decade of research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs.

"If I could wave a magic wand to make a dent in our nation's substance abuse problem, I would make sure that every child in America had dinner with his or her parents at least five times a week," said Joseph A. Califano Jr., chairman and president of the center.

According to researchers, frequent family dinners are associated with lower teen substance abuse.

Compared to teens who have five to seven family dinners in a typical week, teens who dine with their families fewer than three nights in a typical week are two times more likely to have tried marijuana, more than twice as likely to have tried cigarettes and one and a half times more likely to have tried alcohol. . . .

The report also found that frequent family dinners are associated with higher academic performance. . . .

All in all, there are numerous benefits to family dinners.

Families that eat together have children who:
  • Eat healthier meals.
  • Are less likely to become overweight or obese.
  • Are less likely to drink alcohol.
  • Are less likely to try marijuana.
  • Are less likely to use illicit drugs.
  • Are less likely to have friends who abuse prescription drugs.
  • Will get better grades in school.
  • Will talk to their parents more.
  • Will be more likely to tell parents about serious problems.
  • Will be more likely to feel that their parents are proud of them.
  • Will live in homes where there is less stress and tension. . . .
The First Presidency declared . . . that "however worthy and appropriate other demands or activities may be, they must not be permitted to displace the divinely appointed duties that only parents and families can adequately perform."

Family dinner is one of those things.

In a day when experts have warned against what they call overscheduled children, it seems the best thing parents can do for their children is to stay home and sit down for regular meals.

Research confirms it will do them more good than soccer and piano combined.

So when you are at the end of your wits, trying to meet the demanding daily needs of your family, it may be helpful to remember the catch phrase promoted by the National Center on Addiction and Abuse: "What your kids really want for dinner is you!"

4 Bits and tidbits

Jerry
We talked on the phone briefly with Jerry this past Saturday to talk about the new temple in Meridian President Monson announced in conference that morning. Jerry and Jim are hoping to go to St. George later this month (or whenever they are through caring for Jim’s sister) to visit Kay and Karen. Jerry sounded good when we talked with him.

Kay’s family
Much of Kay’s family was together in Layton a week ago Sunday for Austin’s missionary farewell. Austin, son of Kyle and Melissa, is Kay’s oldest grandson and the first of that next generation in their family to serve a mission. He enters the Provo MTC next week, April 13, to prepare to serve in the Paraguay Asuncion Mission.

Dean’s family
Michael, Shauna, and their six kids drove to southern California for a week during spring break and spent three days at Disneyland and California Adventure. They stayed overnight in St. George both going and coming.

Cade, Becca, and Mimi flew to Texas during the same week, where they visited Cade’s mom and her husband serving a mission in San Antonio. And they visited a lot of cool stuff in that part of Texas.

Robert, Rachael, and their four girls during their spring break a week earlier drove from southern Illinois to Florida to go to Disneyworld. They stopped midway in Atlanta and succeeded in kidnapping Eliza and her three children to go with them to Florida.

Vince and Mary had planned a trip to Guatemala, where Vince served his mission, but plans didn’t work out and they didn’t feel right about going, so they spent three or four days in Las Vegas instead. They saw some shows while there, including the Lion King.

And Chris, Camilla, and Sam drove straight through from Everett to Bountiful in a single day a week ago Sunday with their two cars and all their household belongings in a rental truck. Chris’s dad had flown up to help them drive back. They are now living in an apartment here in Bountiful, about two miles from where we live. Chris started working on April 1 as the manager of the Great Harvest in Bountiful. Camilla has been hired to teach a French-immersion Kindergarten class starting in the fall. She will be doing some substitute teaching during the remainder of this school year.

Dale’s family
We talked on the phone with both Dale and LeAnn this past Saturday to talk about the new temple in Meridian President Monson announced in conference that morning. They were obviously surprised and pleased. They work in the Boise Temple, just miles away, and said that during peak times on Saturdays and evenings the temple is exceedingly busy. Their temple president told them it is the fourth busiest temple in the Church.

Kira and her husband have moved back to Nampa. Keisha and her fiancĂ©, who is the brother of Kira’s husband, are planning to be married in the Boise Temple on Saturday, June 11. Nathan and his wife are living in Taiwan, where Nathan teaches English.

6 What in the world

New temples
Meridian was one of three locations mentioned by President Thomas S. Monson in the opening moments of the annual general conference of the Church on Saturday, April 2. The other two were Fort Collins, Colorado, and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Meridian one will be the second temple in the Treasure Valley, the fifth in the state of Idaho.

7 A final word

Spring keeps trying to come here in the Mountain West, in fits and starts it seems, but winter storms keep making their comeback. It’s hard to complain though when we compare our relatively docile weather to the destructive storms, tornadoes, and flooding that have hit parts of the Midwest and South this past week. Or the awful destruction that engulfed Japan last month and still plagues the people of that island nation.

Perhaps an important life lesson here: No matter how bad things may appear, no matter how trying our particular circumstances, no matter how much it rains (or snows) on our personal parades, we don’t have to look too far to find other people or other places that have it worse.

We really are a blessed people. We enjoy many opportunities and advantages that billions of people on this planet do not enjoy. Little wonder that the scriptures enjoin us to “live in thanksgiving daily” (Alma 34:38).

And this important counsel: “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalms 118:24).
