Last week we briefly chronicled the founding of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. This week (and next week in continuing celebration of February as Scouting month) we are listing some of the major milestones in Scouting's 100-year history.
1910: Scouting incorporated on February 8
1911: First edition of Handbook for Boys published
1912: The BSA purchased Boys' Life magazine and made it its own monthly publication
1913: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints became the first religious body to adopt Scouting
1916: The U.S. Congress voted unanimously to give the BSA a federal charter
1918: Rotary International became the first service club to sponsor Boy Scout troops
1919: President Woodrow Wilson established National Boy Scout Week
1924: Norman Rockwell painted the first of his Boy Scout calendars
1925: Membership in the Boy Scouts of America topped 1 million
1926: The first Silver Buffalo awards were presented for distinguished service to youth
1930: Cub Scouting began as the BSA's program for younger boys
1934: The Order of the Arrow became an official program of the BSA
1935: The 5 millionth copy of the Handbook for Boys was printed
1937: The first National Scout Jamboree was held in the shadow of the Washington Monument
1941: The Webelos rank was created for older Cub Scouts
1948: The first Wood Badge course conducted
1950: Membership ages were lowered to 8 for Cub Scouts, 11 for Boy Scouts, and 14 for Explorers
1953: The first Pinewood Derby was held in California
1959: Exploring was established as a distinct program from Boy Scouting
1960: On Scouting's 50th birthday the U.S. Post Office issued a 4-cent commemorative stamp
