5 Our family 50 years ago

Excerpts from the June 1959 diary of Dorothy Batt Cleverly (1915-1982). The full text of her diary can be found online at Dorothy's Idaho Diaries and is updated daily, exactly 50 years to the day after it was originally written. The family at the time lived on a 40-acre farm in the Deer Flat area south of Nampa, Idaho.

Mon, June 15. Sent Jerry 12 page letter. He got Oregon Income Tax refund $13.90. I started on a diet, first 3 days liquid.

Tues, June 16. Ray went to Brysons until noon & Gene worked over to neighbors until about 10: I dampened down a mo. iorning, don't feel very good.

Wed, June 17. Gene hayed for neighbor above us all day & Ray worked for Bryson until noon. Dean & Dale went up to corner, Kay took them, & went to Primary with Barlows. Kay laid around all day. Kay took Ray in to Mutual & came back & we all went to Nampa-Caldwell drive Inn & saw "Around the World in 80 Days." Gene took us.

Thurs, June 18. No one got up until late.

Fri, June 19. Gene got up at 5:30 & went to work at Brysons. Kay went up to neighbors above us & worked at 8: Ray & Dean hoed beets awhile then did dishes. & went back out in beets. went to Hales & got Ivard a Strata lounger chair for Fathers Day.

Sat, June 20. Gene went to work for Bryson at 6:30, Kay went in Hay for neighbors & Ray went up on hy-way & worked in hay. cleaned front room & changed everything around & they brought Ivards Father Day chair. Jerry sent Ivard a card. Kids came home half dead they were so tired & hot.

Sun, June 21. Gene did chores & was late so Ivard, Kay & Ray went to Priesthood without him. I had a bath & the rest of us went to sunday school. stoped & got 2 1/2 gal icecream & Ivard a cake & came home & Ray got dinner & Gail, Lynda & kids came & we ate. Gail gave Ivard 3 pr. socks & we gave him the chair - foot stool & 2 pr. garments.
