Growth in the Andes Area
Karen posted the following about the history of missionary work in Peru and surrounding countries: "November 1st marks the 50-year anniversary of the Church forming a mission in Peru. The first was the Mision Andina [the Andes Mission]. It encompassed Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador. In the beginning there were not enough missionaries to go to all of those countries. Kay served all over Peru, which now has 7 missions.
"Last Sunday and again today he talked with some of the older members (not necessarily in age) of our ward and asked them for their histories. Not only are they writing their stories, but they know other first members and have asked them to as well. When we receive them we are hoping to put them into some sort of booklet form. Also, some of the missionaries who served when Kay was here, have shared some remarkable faith building stories. We are going to include some of them in each of our newsletters.
"Also, we have decided to do all that we can to find some of these people. We are also going to try and find some old pictures of what Lima looked like at that time. Please keep us in your prayers to help us in this endeavor as we know we will need Divine intervention."
Jerry's birthday
We tried calling Jerry for his birthday on Thursday, June 11, but could never get through. When we finally talked to him yesterday afternoon, he said he had a nice birthday, which he celebrated over three days. And he said that Dale and Jackie and everyone had invited him out to dinner this week, but his legs were bothering him and he wasn't sure he was up to it.
Youth conference
The Layton Utah South Stake concluded its youth conference with a musical theatrical presentation in Layton High School on Saturday, June 13. We were there to see two of our granddaughters, Meghan and Mimi, who live in different wards in the same stake, perform. Mimi had just turned 12 earlier in the week and entered Young Women just in time to participate.
Afterward, we also saw Chuck and Andrea (Kay's family), who also live in the stake. Their son Marshall was also in the production. He played the part in a vignette of the "certain man [who] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed leaving him half dead" (Luke 10:30). He was rescued, fortunately, by the good Samaritan who happened along the way.
