The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration in what is now America is a topic of modest contention. Traditionally, the first Thanksgiving occurred at the site of the Plymouth Plantation in 1621. This celebration was modeled on harvest festivals that were common in Europe at the time. It is also argued, however, that the earliest attested thanksgiving celebration in what is now the United States occurred on September 8, 1565, in what is now St. Augustine, Florida, more than half a century earlier.Thanksgiving has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln during the midst of the Civil War proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving on the final Thursday of November. It became a Federal holiday in 1941.
Except for a three-year suspension during World War II, the annual Macey's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been an annual event since 1924.
