Kay's family

A March 23 post by Ike on Facebook: "There's nothing like coming home to discover your house has been robbed and they have taken every electronic device!" That does not sound like good news at all.

Kay reported that Ike's son Carson, who is a junior in high school, has been offered a football scholarship to Purdue University. Way to go, Carson!

Gene's family

We talked on the phone with Cheryl on the day before her birthday. She said that she and Gene had gone to Texas to visit some of her family and to visit Kelley and Rhonda. They had a good visit. Ronnie drove down to Moab to pick them up on their way home, and they stopped in Ogden to visit Lynda in Ogden and had a nice visit with her.

Dean's family

Kate Halverson was born at 7:08 p.m. on Friday, March 23, to happy parents, Pete and Anna Halverson. The baby, who was delivered at home with the help of a midwife, weighed 9 pounds even and was 19 1/2 inches long. She is Pete and Anna's second child, Dean and Claudia's 22nd grandchild.

Jacob Cleverly, a sixth grader at Heritage Elementary in Layton, Utah, placed 15th out of 100 contestants in the state geography bee held at Thanksgiving Point on Friday, March 30. Jacob is the almost-12-year-old son of Michael and Shauna.

5 Our family 50 years ago

Sun, Apr 1.  Jerry - Ray & Dean went to priesthood & Ray came & got me, Jackie & Dale & I went to prayer meeting, Sunday School and Fast meeting. I bore my Testimony.

Mon, Apr 2.  I came home from work & Ivard was already home from Glenns Ferry & in bed. I went to bed at 10: & Ivard got up & tended Jackie. I got up at 1:30 & Ivard & Jackie took me up to Bank to streighten out Kays account, his check bounced. He wrote 2. Paid Ins. on car & pick-up. We went & paid fuel oil bill & got a new hose, now I am busted, flat.

Tues, Apr 3.  Ivard got me up at 1:15 & I had a shower & got ready & went & Picked Venice up & we went to Alsips to Elna's husband Bill funeral. I was home by 3: I wrote to Kay & mailed it.

Wed, Apr 4.  I got up at 12:15 & took Jackie to her dance lesson. Came home at 2:30 & laid down awhile but couldn't get to sleep. I fixed supper & we ate & when Ivard left for Glenns Ferry at 8: I went to bed until time to go to work - sure tired.

Thurs, Apr 5.  I came home from work & went to bed & read my new relief society mag. while Jackie watched her shows then we went to bed for 2 hrs. Got up & washed clothes, & cleaned stove - cupboards ect & did dishes everything in house was dirty. I was still doing them when Dean & Mike came from school & they helped me. Mike Perry is going to stay with us for few days while his folks are in Salt Lake to Conference.

Fri, Apr 6.  I came home from work & Ivard came from Glenns Ferry right after, got a ride up. At 2: Ivard & I took Jackie over to Gails, after we went to bank and left her to play. We played cards with Gail & Lynda & Gail left for work & at 3:40 Ivard & I went to Wilder to base ball game. Adrian won 18 to 5 & Gene pitched whole game & did real good. He couldn't come home he had a date.

Sat, Apr 7.  Ivard was 47 today, he wasn't comeing home today but he walked in about 9:15, got a ride up. When Jerry came home Jackie & I went up & got Ivard a birthday cake & some presents & some pants for Ray. We ate at 5: and Dean & Mike went & did chores then at 6:50 Ivard & I took Jerry up to Dairy Queen to work & Ray, Mike & Dean to Stake House to general conference. I took Ivard up to go back to Glenns Ferry.

Sun, Apr 8.  No Sunday school. Dean & Mike went & did their chores & Jerry cooked them breakfast. I spent all day working on Income tax & books. Kids & I listeed & watched General conference & Kids played games. Jerry went & got us each a hamberg & a gal. of root beer & icecream & we had root beer floats for supper, hamberger, bread & gravy, peas & carrots, cold roast & cottage cheese.

Mon, Apr 9.  I came home from work & Ivard was home from Glenns Ferry & in bed. I took Jackie & we went right to bed. her & Ivard got up in a couple of hrs. Ivard woke me up at 1: & said him & Sis were going to Adrian with Gail. brought Ivard a fishing pole for his birthday. Went back to bed at 2:45 & Ray woke me up at 6: I got Jerry & we ate & him & Dean went to Mutual.

Tues, Apr 10.  I woke up at 3: & made a beef stew for supper. Ivard arranged for Sunvita meeting at Gails tonite. I wrote Mother.

Wed, Apr 11.  I came home from work sick & went to bed until 12:30. I got up and took Jackie to her dance lesson. Dean fixed supper, spagetti. Ray went to work after school. Jerry went to work at Dairy Queen. Ivard left for Glenns Ferry at 8:30. I laid off sick.

Thurs, Apr 12.  Washed 6 batches cloths and worked on my income tax. I got ready & took Ray to work at 3:45 & Jackie to Primary then I went & bought Gene a white corsage for his Prom tomorrow nite. I laid off sick.

Fri, Apr 13.  I got up and took Jerry to work & Kids went to school. I took Gene up & got him some new dress shoes & socks & white shirt for tonite, a pr. work shoes, pr. levies, pr cords, 2 school shirts, 2 pr shorts & a knit sweater shirt - $60. It will come off what I owe Gene. We came home & Gail was here & Gene toook him home & took his car for tonite, Junior Prom at Adrian. Ivard & Jacke took me to Boise to Dr. Cudmore. I lost 7 lbs & 2 in around hips & bust. We had hamberger, fries & shake & came home. At 7: we all went up to church to Elders beef supper - sure good.

Sat, Apr 14.  I went back to work tonite.

Sun, Apr 15.  Lyle came, alone, on bus. Jerry, Ray, Dean & Dale went to conference & I made some cocoa for me, Lyle & Jackie & in walked Ivard. Kids came & Ray went to store & they ate & Jerry, Ray & Dean went back to conference.

Mon, Apr 16.  I came home from work & fixed Lyle & Jackie breakfast & washed a batch of cloths then got Income tax ready. Gail came & Jackie went home with him to spend day. Ivard took me up to see Federal Income tax guy & he helped me finish my Income tax & we came home & copied it then went up & mailed it & went & did the State. Dean fixed supper. Jerry & Dean went to Mutual.

Tues, Apr 17.  I came home from work & went to bed. Gail, Lynda & Kids came & woke me up at 1: Ivard - Lyle, Sis & I went to Adrian in pick-up & met Gail at Blanch's & went & loaded up the rest of his junk then went up to high school & watched Homedale beat Adrian. Gene pitched last 5 innings.

Wed, Apr 18.  Ivard woke me at 12:30 & I took Jackie to dance lesson then we went & put Kays money in bank & got groc.  Ray stayed home today & him & Lyle went over to Gails all afternoon. Dale went to cub scouts.

Thurs, Apr 19.  Got next 3 nites off for Easter vacation. They got me up at noon & at 1: Jackie & I took Lyle up to bus depot and he left for home. I took Jackie to Primary.

Fri, Apr 20.  Kids didn't have to go to school today, Easter Vacation. Ray stayed in bed until noon. Dean fixed supper & we ate when Jerry got home but Jerry & Ray didn't eat, they went ward teaching.

Sat, Apr 21.  At 6: Ivard & I, Ray, Dean, Dale & Jackie went over to take Jeff a birthday card. We gave him a dollar bill & 15 nickles taped together. We played cards & had icecream & cake when Gail came. I watched T.V. & made baked beans & cooked eggs & potatoes for tomorrow.

Sun, Apr 22.  Jerry, Ray & Dean went to Priesthood. I made potatoe salad & put a meat loaf in oven & had a shower & Dale, Jackie & I went to sunday school & my meeting before. Jackie wore her new Easter outfit. It was warm & sunny.

Mon, Apr 23.  Came home from work and Ivard was already home from Glenns Ferry. Kids were home today Easter Vacation. I woke up at noon & Jackie was here alone, out in corner swimming. Ray went to Dr. at 11: then to work at noon. Dean went selling candy all day. Dale went to Garners. Gail & Lynda came awhile then I went back to bed. I woke up & Ivard was reading & Jackie was clear up the road on roller skates. I gave her a good licking. Kids went to Mutual.

Tues, Apr 24.  Jerry & Dean went up to hospital to see some ward members. Ivard & Dale went to Cub Scout Pack meeting and Jackie then to ball game.

Wed, Apr 25.  Ray stayed home with his foot. Went to Dr. but didn't see him. Nurse told him to get crutches so he did.

Thurs, Apr 26.  I came home from work. At 1: Jackie & I went to bed. Got up at 3:50 & took Jackie to Primary & Ray to Dr. Jerry went up to Dairy Queen to work & Ray took off and went over to Gails, run half my gas out.

Fri, Apr 27.  I came home from work & went to bed at 10: I didn't get to sleep until after 11:30, had to Keep getting up to bathroom. Got up at 2: for half hr & went back to bed. Ivard & Sis got up. Ray didn't come home from school went right to work, then up to church to Bread & Milk Supper then to a show & never got home until midnite.

Sat, Apr 28.  I came home from work & went right to bed & had just got to bed when here come Ivard & got in bed & woke me up with his old cold feet. Jerry was to work & Ray came home at noon & had a bath & got ready & went to Stake House to catch the bus for Nyssa to Seminary graduation, banquet & dance. I took Jerry to Dairy Queen to work at 2:30 & Dean up to church to go collect fast offerings.

Sun, Apr 29.  Jerry - Ray & Dean went to Priesthood. Dale woke me up at 11:15 & I had to read my sunday school lesson & get me & Jackie ready by time Ray came after us at 11:35. Ivard stayed in bed most all day. I came home from church at 2: & went to bed & Jerry - Ray & Dean went over to Stake House to Missionary meeting & never got home until 6: then they left for church at 6:30 - chorus practice first. Ivard left for Glenns Ferry at 8:

Mon, Apr 30.  Had a flat tire when I came out of work. Chief helped us change it. I came home & washed 7 batches of cloths. I went right to bed at 12:30 & got up at 4: We ate & all of us went to Mutual to Talent Show. Jackie & rest of dance girls from our ward did their Patso dance.

Names Submitted for Temple Ordinances

"We would like to reiterate," the First Presidency wrote to members of the Church on February 29, "the policies first stated in 1995 concerning the submission of names for proxy temple ordinances.

- Our preeminent obligation is to seek out and identify our own ancestors. Those whose names are submitted for proxy temple ordinances should be related to the submitter.

- Without exception, Church members must not submit for proxy temple ordinances any names from unauthorized groups, such as celebrities and Jewish Holocaust victims. If members do so, they may forfeit their New FamilySearch privileges. Other corrective action may also be taken.

- Members are encouraged to participate in FamilySearch indexing which is vital to family history and temple work."

7 A final word

Our daughter Eliza and her family are putting their roots down in Atlanta. Next month Paul graduates from pharmacy school and has accepted a generous offer from the pharmacy he worked at part-time as he made his way through Mercer University.

Curiously, I ran across the following blog that Paul had posted exactly four years ago this month as he was preparing to move his little family clear across the country:

"With the winding down of this semester my attention is starting finally to turn to the sunset of our time in Utah. We will begin our move to Atlanta in 100 days as we plan on leaving town on July 25 to drive out there to find a place to live.

"I am a person of high anxiety, especially when I am traveling into unknown territory. . . . I worry about a lot of things that I probably shouldn't, thus I am really worried about finding a place to live and all the other stuff included in moving across the country. . . .

"I have always felt strangely attached to the city of Atlanta. I wondered why because a few years ago I would have told you that there are a dozen or so other places I would rather visit on vacation, and until recently I just always figured I would live in Utah the rest of my life.

"All growing up, I always had an interest in the city of Brussels, Belgium. Whenever we studied geography or history and talked about Brussels, I just felt strangely attached to that city. So, I guess it was no surprise when I received my mission call to the Belgium Brussels Mission when I turned 19.

"Likewise, I don't think it is just coincidence that we are going to Atlanta. There are adventures to have, friends to make, and a family to continue to build there. I can't even explain how excited I am to go to pharmacy school. I know it is going to be tough, but I eagerly await the challenge and await the good times of the future."

Interestingly, I had the same type of experience with my mission. As I was growing up, I had a fascination with the country of Brazil and the city of Rio de Janeiro particularly. During high school I even did a journalism paper about freedom of the press in Brazil. A few years later, when I turned 19, I was called to the Brazil North Mission, which was headquartered in Rio. Anyone who knows very much about me knows how profoundly those two years in Brazil influenced and shaped and blessed the rest of my life.

I don't know why Paul and Eliza are meant to be in Atlanta. They are, after all, holding three of our grandchildren hostage there. But I'm at peace with it all because I feel, as they do, that that is precisely where they are supposed to be.
